Dr. Carl Koschmann
Carl is a pediatric neuro oncologist, father of two, and part of the original Rock Cancer team. He took care of Vara as a training oncologist at U-M, and his original climbing sessions with Vara after completing chemotherapy planted the original seeds. Carl represented Planet Rock and U-M Pediatric Oncology in a brief and disastrous run as an American Ninja Warrior applicant (video here). He loves belaying kids and helping with all aspects of Rock Cancer.

Vara James
Vara's personal battle with cancer as a young girl led her to discover rock climbing, which quickly evolved from a therapeutic outlet to a passionate pursuit. With a vision to offer the same source of strength and joy to other children facing similar challenges. Now an avid climber, Vara continues to push boundaries, both in climbing and in her advocacy for pediatric cancer patients. Her journey from a patient to a role model illustrates the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of finding one's passion amidst adversity. Vara's leadership and enthusiasm at Rock Cancer not only foster a supportive community but also ignite hope and courage in every young climber she meets.

Vishal John
Vishal's passion for rock climbing isn't just a mere hobby—it's an embodiment of his zest for life and the challenges it presents. The true joy for Vishal comes in the privilege of aiding others on their climbing journeys, guiding them over cruxes and cheering as they reach new heights. To him, rock climbing is more than just a sport—it's a profound connection to nature and a way to uplift those around him. Vishal's favorite part about Rock Cancer is the people and the Ice Cream, but mainly the Ice Cream!!!

Emily Gordon
Emily proudly stands as a member of Rock Cancer, driven by her role as a mom to a two-time Wilms survivor, Vara James. This program holds a special place in her heart as it empowers children who are battling cancer or have completed their treatments to climb, fostering a sense of accomplishment and building a supportive community. Together, we uplift these young warriors and their families, reminding them that every summit reached is a testament to their incredible strength and resilience. She loves seeing the parent's joy when their child achieves a new goal, or when they realize they are not alone. Better Together!

Annalise Rowe
Annalise grew up rock climbing with her family and fell in love with the sport at a young age. She became re-invested in climbing about 3 years ago after starting college (go blue!) and is excited to continue to get to know the Ann Arbor climbing community. Annalise’s favorite part about Rock Cancer climbing nights is watching others grow in their skill and confidence (and the popsicles of course)!
-
Lydia Benitez
Lydia is a leukemia clinical pharmacist and assistant professor at UofM. She has been climbing since 2019, and her favorite part of Rock Cancer is the opportunity to share the joy of fighting gravity with others!
-
Dana Messinger
Dana is a PhD student in Carl Koschmann’s lab, which is how she got roped into (pun intended) volunteering for Rock Cancer. She was introduced to rock climbing by her brothers over 2 decades ago, but has gained more interest in the last couple years. Dana’s favorite part of Rock Cancer is watching kids face and conquer their fears on the rock wall, all while having a friend or sibling by their side!
-
John Li
John started climbing during Junior year of college as part of the rock climbing club at the University of Michigan. He got into Rock Cancer because Vishal said there was going to be free ice cream! But also, he enjoys helping and teaching kids how to climb. The best part of Rock Cancer is seeing kids grow and develop, becoming more confident in themselves!
-
Jason Wong
Jason is a chemical wizard by day and sports hobby hoarder by night. He got roped into the wild world of rock climbing thanks to Lydia back in 2019. The real highlight of Rock Cancer is trying to answer Carl's mind-bending icebreaker questions.
-
Natasha Mehta
Natasha has been rock climbing since she was a freshman in college (3 years now) but climbing any tree at any time all her life. Natasha's favorite part about Rock Cancer is that everyone is so willing to try new things and help each other out. And, of course, the ice cream!
